Tools of the Trade

By: Matthew Courtney

Edmodo

Edmodo is like a educational facebook. It is a way for teachers and students to connect and talk about schoolwork and homework. You can use this to check what your homework is or ask for help with homework. This tool is good because you can ask the teacher things from home and it's easy.

Remind

It is a way for teachers to remind students of assignments before they are due. You can use it when you forget about homework or an assignment the teacher sends out a reminder so you don't forget that it's due. This tool can be accessed through an app, an e-mail, or a text message.

Easel.ly

Easl.ly is a tool that can be used to create a graphic organizer to display information on the computer. You can use this tool to make circle maps, flow charts, and bubble maps for a project or classwork. This is an easy way to display information and to help people learn about the topic through a fun way. It also makes it easier to understand.

Tackk

It is a way to create a web page to display items and explain these items such as this one. You can use it to make a presentation or to show someone something in an appealing way. The benefits are that you don't need to have coding experience to make a webpage.

Design Cycle

The design cycle is a way to solve problems quickly and efficiently. You can use this tool to fix a problem with a solution. This tool can be used to solve a variety of everyday problems.

Inquiring & Analyzing

Students are presented with a design situation, from which they identify a problem that needs to be solved. They analyze the need for a solution and conduct an inquiry into the nature of the problem.

In order to reach the aims of design, students should be able to:

i. Explain and justify the need for a solution to a problem for a specified client/target audience

Example: My computer is old and won’t work and I can’t log in to the computer. I can’t work on my school project and I well get an F if I don’t complete the project.

ii. Identify and prioritize the primary and secondary research needed to develop a solution to the problem

Example: Call tech support to find the problem. Look up the problem on another computer. Check the computer manual.

iii. Analyze a range of existing products that inspire a solution to the problem

Example: Take it to the computer store. Take it to the geek squad. Go to a library and work on a computer there. Save up for a new one.

iv. Develop a detailed design brief, which summarizes the analysis of relevant research.

Example: I was trying to work on my project for school and my computer wouldn’t let me log in. So I called tech support and they said my computer was beyond repair and I needed a new one.

Developing Ideas

Students write a detailed specification, which drives the development of a solution. They present the solution.

In order to reach the aims of design, students should be able to:

i. Develop a design specification, which clearly states the success criteria for the design of solution

Example: Needs to be a newer computer. Needs to run office, word etc. More memory.

ii. Develop a range of feasible design ideas, which can be correctly interpreted by others

Example: Buy a new computer and in the meantime work on a computer at the library.

iii. Present the final chosen design and justify its selection

Example:Go to the library to work on project and save up for a new computer in the meantime.

iv. Develop accurate and detailed planning drawings/diagrams and outline the requirements for the creation of the chosen solution.

Example:

-Go to the library and work on project

- Save up money

- When I have enough buy new computer

Creating the Solution

Students plan the creation of the chosen solution and follow the plan to create a prototype sufficient for testing and evaluation.

In order to reach the aims of design, students should be able to:

i. Construct a logical plan, which describes the efficient use of time and resources, sufficient for peers to be able to follow to create the solution

Example:

-Call tech. support/me/5 min.

-Tech. support diagnoses computer problem/Tech. support/30 min.

-Walk to the library/me/30 min.

-Work on project/me/3 hr.

-Save up for computer/me/1 yr.

-Buy computer/me/1 hr.

-Buy Microsoft products to use on projects/me/1 hr.

ii. Demonstrate excellent technical skills when making the solution

Example:

Search for newer computer

Find a good priced computer

iii. Follow the plan to create the solution, which functions as intended

Example: Put a check next to each step of the plan

iv. Fully justify changes made to the chosen design and plan when making the solution

Example: Fully justify changes made to the chosen design and plan when making the solution

v. Present the solution as a whole, either: in electronic form, or through photographs of the solution from different angles, showing details.

Example: Present the solution as a whole, either: in electronic form, or through photographs of the solution from different angles, showing details.

Evaluating

Students design tests to evaluate the solution, carry out those tests and objectively evaluate its success. Students identify areas where the solution could be improved and explain how their solution will impact on the client or target audience.

In order to reach the aims of design, students should be able to:

i. Design detailed and relevant testing methods, which generate data, to measure the success of the solution

Example: Design detailed and relevant testing methods, which generate data, to measure the success of the solution

ii. Critically evaluate the success of the solution against the design specification

Example: Critically evaluate the success of the solution against the design specification

iii. Explain how the solution could be improved

Example: Explain how the solution could be improved

iv. Explain the impact of the solution on the client/target audience.

Never mind.
Someone did mess with it though.
