About Me: He was an American astronaut and the first person to walk on the Moon. He was also an aerospace engineer, naval aviator, test pilot, and university professor. Before becoming an astronaut, he was an officer in the US Navy and he served in the Korean War. He earned his bachelor's degree at Purdue University and served as a test pilot where he logged over 900 flights. He later completed graduate studies at the University of Southern California.
In 1958, he was selected for the US Air Force's Man in Space Soonest program. November 1960, he was chosen as part of the pilot consultant group for the X-20 Dyna-Soar. In March 1966, he was signed to Gemini 8 as the Command pilot. July 21, 1969 he stepped on the moon and made history. Armstrong died in Cincinnati, Ohio at the age of 82, after complications from coronary artery bypass surgery.
