ALTHEA GIBSON

She loved to play tennis that was her favorite sport, Althea Gibson was born on August 25,1927.She was the first black athlete women to cross the line of international tennis.In 1951she was first black women to compete at the Wimbledon. In 1956 she became the first person of color to win the Grand Slam title called the French Open. In she was the first champion to receive the trophy personally from Queen Elizabeth2. She shook hands with the queen of England. In late 1958 she have won 56 national and international singles by the time she became pro in 1959 and doubles titles including 11 Grand Slam championships. In 1972 she began running Pepsi Colas national mobile tennis project. Her former doubles partner Angela Buxton made Gibson's plight known to the tennis community and raised nearly $1 million dollars in donates around the world. In early 2003 Gibson survived a heart attack, but died on September 28, 2003 at the age of 76 years old from following respiratory and bladder infections.
