The Moon's Role

The moon has eight phases. It affects things like tides. For example, when the moon is in it's First Quarter phase, it's a neap tide. That means it has a tide with the least differences between low and high tides. If it's in it's New Moon phase, it's a spring tide. That means it has the greatest differences between low and high tides. Then there's eclipses. That happens when an object in space comes between the sun and a third object, causing a shadow on that object, which makes an eclipse happen. There are solar eclipses and lunar eclipses. The moon makes all of these things happen.

Phases are the different shapes of the moon you see from earth. The changing positions of the moon, sun, and earth cause the moon's phases. When less than half of the moon is visible, it's a crescent. When more than half is visible, it's called Gibbus. When no part of the moon is visible it's a new moon, and when all is visible, it's called a full moon. When a moon is in a waxing phase, it appears to be growing. When it's in a waning phase, it appears to be decreasing.

The rise and fall of ocean water is what we call tides. Tides are mainly differences in how much gravity from the sun and moon pulls on different parts of earth. Changes in the positions of earth, the sun, and the moon affect the heights of the tides. Tides affect how high the water in a place is.   Most coastal areas have two high tides and two low tides each day.

Lunar eclipses happen at a full moon when earth is directly between the moon and the sun. During a lunar eclipse, Earth blocks sunlight from reaching the moon. These can only happen at a full moon because the moon is closest to earth's shadow during that time. A solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the sun and earth, blocking sunlight from earth. Eclipses affect earth, because they affect how much light we get.

Moon's importance

The moon's role is very important. Sometimes, we don't realize that without the moon, there wouldn't be things like tides. That means that people wouldn't be able to do things like surfing. People that rely on the moon for light would live in total darkness. That means that they wouldn't be able to go out at night because they wouldn't have things like flashlights.
