British Imperialism in India
Was it Helpful or Harmful?
I personally believe that the British Imperialism in India, was harmful for many different reasons. For starters, Britain ruined India's previous economy and Industries due to the fact that they were forcing them to import goods their goods from Britain and not buy their own goods from India. Multiple Industries such as the handmade cloth industry, clock-making, and carpentry industries, fell because cloth was said to be made of better quality in Britain because of how many people they had and their mass production.
Another reason why it was harmful was because of how they ruined Indian culture. British destroyed the native and authentic culture of India. Ex: The Sepoy rebellion: The Sepoy rebellion was between the British and the Indians. Indian soldiers that worked for the British during the British rule were known as the Sepoys. When British started to advance the Indian technology, they came up with new riffle carriages. The only thing was, to make it fire, it had to be greased with animal(pig/cow) fat. (Hindus feel that cow’s are sacred, Muslims do not eat pig). When the Sepoys requested the British to use another riffle, their answer was no. The British forced the Indians to fire, and when they didn't, the British got mad. the Sepoys started to rebel, but the british fought back harshly, they tortured and killed the Indians(most who were innocent) They destroyed Indian culture to try and replace it with British culture. Even though the British helped the Indians tremendously in their Economics. They improved their roads and railroads. Telegraphs, also became very popular there which helped their trade with other countries, they Indian government fell. There was no real government for a good couple months because the Indians and the British kept fighting about how the government should be ruled. Later on, the Indians were kicked out of their own government. It denied them to be involved in their government news and their world trade statistics, so the Indians had no responsibility.
My third and finale reason as to why the British Imperialism was harmful was the British Affection: Segregation became a huge problem in Indian. British set up “EuropeanOnly” parks, clubs, railroad cars. The only Indians at these places were servants. The best quality things were saved for the British and its unfair for the Indians to get no privileges in their home country, especially if they are the people who are making all these improvements. The Europeans created two different societies and thus, the segregation was put into effect.
