Essential Question: What was the impact of structure on the Catholic Church?

Critical Thinking Question: What is the role of the pope in the Catholic Church?

Foundations of Power and Influence

The Roman Catholic Church began around 30 A.D. when Jesus told his apostles to spread the teachings of the kingdom of God. As Jesus was a Christian, Christianity spread leading to the formation of the church including officers such as deacons, priests, and bishops. Later came the creation of the Pope which was one of the main characteristics of Catholicism.

Papacy and the Vatican Power Structure

Papacy Power Structure

Papacy refers to the office of the pope or the government structure of the Roman Catholic Church where the pope is the top of the hierarchy. Papacy is also known as the Holy See (See- the official home of a bishop). Holy See is used when referring to the Papacy’s functions and authority. The Pope has two types of power which include spiritual power (involves religious practices and beliefs) and civil power (involves running Vatican City as an independent country).

Balance and Maintenance of Power in Europe

Balance and Maintenance of Power in the Church

Balance and Maintenance of Power in Rule

The power of the pope and the power of emperors throughout Europe was in a state of unrest. There were disputes over different beliefs, the popes believed that they were superiors to the emperors and the emperors believed that the popes were just servants of the Catholic Church. Although, some emperors had these beliefs as seen in the dispute over the Papal States some emperors including Constantine worshiped Christianity and the creation of Catholicism and contributed to it’s growth and spread.
