This image in black & white, shows how hard life was after the stock market crash. Families who could not pay their rent or mortgage lost their homes. Homeless people had put shacks up on public lands forming communities call shantytowns. Since people didn't have homes, they would try to look for jobs, and since walking around to different jobs filling out applications was tiring and didn't seem to work they would wear a sandwich board with their application information to hopefully get a job easier. Plus they were in New York City, so that already was a lot of people who could see them, and employ them. In the color picture it show Nawrocki wearing a sandwich board with his application information. He had just got laid off his job, and is trying to find someone that will give him a job, just like the homeless did back in 1930.
