Economic, Political and Social characteristics of the Southern Colonies
Maryland was founded in 1632 by Lord Baltimore. The main reasons for Maryland being founded was for religious freedom for Catholics and business reasons. In 1649 the Toleration act allowed all Christians in Maryland religious freedom. Maryland's main way of making money was through cash crops like tobacco which was sold and traded with other goods in the Chesapeake Bay. Slaves would harvest the cash crops in Maryland because no one would do the work for such little pay. Maryland, along with the other southern colonies, had a representative government.
