Phobia

Details explaining what it is, how it happens, and how to treat it

Phobia... a very extreme fear of something. It's usually irrational, meaning you shouldn't really be that scared of something. A lot of people have phobias, the most common ones being Arachnophobia (fear of spiders), Acrophobia (fear of heights), social phobia (fear of social situations) and Trypanophobia (the fear of needles/injections)

Personally, I have a very strong phobia that's called Entomophobia, which is the fear of a specific insect. In my case, that insect would be the one above, known as a 'Stink Bug'.

I like to joke around and sometimes call it the Death Bug or Fart Bug. They let out nasty smells when they're scared or threatened, and they fly around and...it's just not a good bug.

Signs to know you have a phobia (and this is for any phobia you may have, not just a bug phobia) are sweaty palms because you're nervous about being somewhere with a lot of people or in the same room as something, shaking like a chihuahua because you're frightened by a certain something, uncontrollable heavy breathing or sweating, and many more. Look for these signs the next time you encounter something that you know you shouldn't be terrified of, but you are, to realize you have a problem.

Lastly, treatment for a phobia of any kind, is to go out there and do it. Don't laugh, I know how hard that is. It's going to be a long process, and some may get over their phobia more quickly than others,  but as long as you try to get over it and keep going, then you will.

First, know what your phobia is. For the example, I'll go with mine.... the stink bug fear.

Second, you figure out why you're scared of it. Does it look scary? Does it hurt you? Is it just really nasty? Etc...

Third, you should begin to try and calm yourself with the idea of being in the same room with it and not freak out and run away. Just try and stay as calm as you can. It's really, really hard, but I promise, it'll get easier the more you do it.

Fourth, you should kill it mercilessly! It is EXTREMELYYYY hard the first times to get anywhere CLOSE to the things your deathly afraid of, but once you stomach it and you just go for it before you can think, you'll learn that it's at least ok.

Fifth, I know these things are horribly hard to do or even think about doing, but you have to try. That's the only way to get over your fear.... you must do the very thing you're afraid of to overcome the fear. Now you should celebrate your victory over your phobia and just enjoy that you made it! You really made it!

If those steps did not help you, try this way then...

A second way to learn how to get over the fear you have is therapy. You  must pay for this instead of giving yourself some credit and doing it yourself because you and I know you can do it!!! But anyways... therapy is another way of getting over something that scares you. You would go every week or so, and sit with a man or woman who will talk you through basically the same things I just did. They'll ask you why you're scared of it... they'll ask you how does being near it or doing it make you feel and why? They'll work with you to try and teach you to calm down. They'll do all the same stuff I told you, but there will be a charge with them.

In conclusion, the best way to know if you have a phobia is talk about it and do some research and pay attention to those signs. It may be really embarrassing for you to even mention or acknowledge that you have a problem, but it's a step to overcome the fear that grips you so hard. Once you realize and try to get over the phobia, you can get help for it. Just remember, you aren't the only person to have a fear quite this strong. There are many others just like you who struggle all the same with different phobias. We're all in the same boat, so join us so we can get through this together!
