Today in History

What does this app do?

Today in history is an app that allows students to view important historical dates and events that occurred on that day. Students can select different events and historical dates that they are interested in and want to learn more about. You can use this app on an ipad/iphone and it is free in the app store.

How can it be used in the classroom?

Students and teachers can use this app as a way to discuss /create a dialogue about historical world events that took place on that very day. This can be used by the teacher as a way of increasing class participation in those students who are shy or choose not to speak in class. Teachers can then create a weekly assignment where each student writes a short paragraph about a historical world event they chose for that week and to tie it in with current events.

TED Talks

What does this app do?

TED is an app where students can go to view videos about innovative leaders in different sectors of society speak about their ideas and developments. These leaders are from a wide array of backgrounds ranging from business executives to radical educational thinkers. Utilize this app for the appropriate grade level. You can use this app on ipad/iphone and is free in the app store

How can it be used in the classroom?

The teacher can select an appropriate ted talk and have the students watch the video at their own leisure and ask for a entry slip (blurb about what they learned from the video). Here is an example of a great TED talk video that can engage students and get critical thinking started.

Flipboard

What does this app do?

Flipboard is an app that can be used by students to keep up with current events in various categories such as daily news, politics, sports etc. This app brings a newspaper to your fingertips.  The app is filled with various media and can be accessed with an iphone/ipad. This app is free in the app store.

How can it be used in the classroom?

Teachers can use this app to review the daily news feed and can tie it in with the material that is being discussed in the course. Students can also use this app to find resources or stories to help them understand any questions they might have regarding current news events.

National Geographic World Atlas

What does this app do?

National Geographic World Atlas is an app that students can use whenever they have any questions about a specific country on earth. The app not only acts as an atlas, it also gives the reader a plethora of other information regarding the country i.e. population, resources, life expectancy etc. You can use this app on ipad/iphone and it costs $2.29 in the app store.

How can it be used in the classroom?

This app can be used by students/teachers whenever they want to research a country they may not know much about. It can be a very useful resource while doing assignments, especially when the countries/regions that are being mentioned in class are not familiar to the learner.

2015 World Factbook

What does this app do?

Have you ever wondered what Germany's biggest export is? Well now you have the app that can give you this information right away. 2015 World Factbook is a great app to learn various statistics and information about any country in the world. If you ever wonder what the national flag of a specific country is, you can look it up in the app. This app is available in the app store for $1.19 and can be used on iphones/ipads.

How can it be used in the classroom?

This app can be used whenever a student is having difficulties learning about a countries environment, climate and geography. This can be used as a resource for an assignment to solidify a students worldview. Students can also use this app to compare different countries and their many different categories. Its shows a comparison of birth rates, death rates, life expectancy and GDP just to name a few.
