Lifeboat Disasters

When an accident happens at sea, it's definitely scary. One is because accidents in general are very scary, and two, because accidents that happen at sea are doubly terrifying because there is no rescue team at the ready to be able to save a crew or a ship. This is why emergency measures are put into place in every sea vessel in order to prevent untoward accidents.

One thing that you will find in every sea vessel is a lifeboat--in fact, multiple life boats. They may be commonly known as the small inflatable kind, but in ships and cruise liners, there are several kinds of life boats and they should be able to accommodate every person on the ship in case of an emergency. There are the inflatable kinds, and then there are also the hollow-shell kinds, which are lightweight but considered to be more durable.

The presence of lifeboats on a ship is not alone to guarantee its efficiency. Lifeboat maintenance is essential in making sure that it is 100% able to save lives. Perhaps the most well-known unfortunate disaster involving a lifeboat is the Penlee lifeboat disaster in 1981 which happened off the coast of England. The lifeboat in question was able to save the lives of passengers involved in a coaster accident, but the lifeboat itself ended up malfunctioning, with sixteen lives lost in the incident.

To prevent such things from ever happening again, lifeboat maintenance is now required by all those who own lifeboats on their vessels. Lifeboat service companies are usually contracted to do regular maintenance check-ups on them, checking the overall exterior, interior, the engine and of course, any other emergency kits included in the lifeboat itself.

It is a very good idea to have the presence of mind to be able to prevent any disaster before it actually happens. Lifeboats are used in so many ways and most notably in rescue operations, so it would be a very big tragedy if it were not well-maintained enough that it would fail and put the lives of many at risk. Observing proper lifeboat maintenance will put at ease many of those who work on and for the water and even their passengers as well.

Interested in what goes on to maintain lifeboat safety? There is a host of information online regarding lifeboats and how they should be used and properly maintained. A good idea is to check out websites of lifeboat servicing companies, since they have articles and guidelines on these. Whether you are a mariner who wants to read up on this or a simple person who enjoys what the water has to offer, be smart and be safe about it.
