The Moon's Role
The Moon's rotation around Earth causes it to have phases. There are eight different moon phases; Waxing crescent, waxing gibbous, waning crescent, waning gibbous, full moon, new moon, first quarter, and third quarter. The tides are caused by how hard the moon and sun pull on different parts of Earth. A spring tide happens only during a new or full moon. A neap only happens during first or third quarter. A solar eclipse happens when the moon lies between the Earth and the sun. A lunar eclipse happens during a full moon when the Earth is directly between the moon and the sun.
Moon phases occur because of the moon's rotation around Earth. The type of phase you see depends on how much of the sunlit side of the moon you see. There is only one side of the moon that is lit by the sun because of the speed that it rotates and revolves (the same speed). If we did not have moon phases and it was always anew moon then there would never be light at night. Or if we always had a full moon there world be a lot of moon light every night.
There are two types of tides. A neap tide occurs only during first or third quarter. This is when the high and low tides have a small difference. Then there is a spring tide that only occurs during a full or new moon. This is when the difference in high and low tide is the greatest. Tides occur because of the moon's gravitational pull on different parts of the Earth. If we didn't have tides there probably wouldn't be as many cars getting stuck on the beach, or as many of people objects getting washed away.
There are two types of eclipses; solar and lunar. Eclipses occur when the moon, Earth, and the sun line up. When a solar eclipse occurs the moon is directly in between the sun and Earth, blocking sunlight from getting to Earth. A lunar eclipse occurs during a full moon when the Earth is directly between the sun and the moon, blocking sunlight from reaching the moon.
The moon is important because it causes us to have tides. Also it helps keep the Earth in orbit. If the moon did not exist that we not have any light at night also. These are a few of the reasons why the moon is important and how the moon affects Earth.
