New Harmony, IN
The importance of this historic town in Indiana is the fact of its attempts to create a utopian society in the early 1800's. In 1825, a Welsh industrialist named Robert Owen bought this town with the intention of creating this utopian society, he also renamed the town New Harmony. The history of New Harmony's intellectual community became very well known for many things. They became known as the center of advances in scientific research and education in the USA. Some other things that the citizens established were the first free library, a civic drama clan, and a public school system open to men and women.
