FISH

Common Name: Glass fish                                       Scientific Name: Parambassis ranga

Biome: Lives in salt and fresh water(Indiana Ocean)          Home Range/Habitat: India         __________________________________________________________________________

      FISH ADAPTATIONS                                         ________________________________

  • 1) Mouth-Mouths on fish vary from suckers to sharp teeth, depending on what kind of prey they're trying to catch.
  • 2) Gills-One cool adaptation of fish is gills. Gills allow fish to pull oxygen from water straight into their bloodstream.
  • 3) Scales-Large scales on a fish are effective for defense, but they also weigh it down, so fish with large scales tend to be slow feeders. On the other hand fish with small or even no scales are usually quick, small, and need speed for survival or to catch food.
  • 4) Eyes vs. Barbels-Fish with large eyes can find their food by sight, but others use whisker-like sensory structures called barbels, which contain taste buds, to taste out for their food.
  • 5) Camouflage and Coloration-Fish who hide in weeds or over rocks often have stripes or blotchy coloration. A fish that's dark on top can hide more easily from a feeder looking down from above, and a fish with a light underbelly is disguised from predators below. Even a plain single-color is the best camouflage for a fish swimming through open waters.
