Designer baby: A baby whose genetic makeup has been artificially selected by genetic engineering combined with invitro fertilization to ensure the presence or absence of particular characteristics.

Invitro fertilization: fertilizing an egg with sperm in a test tube

Pre implantation genetic diagnosis: used to screen embryos for genetic diseases in order to select healthy embryos to implant.

It was founded in the mid 1990s by Jacques Cohen, and it was first attempted in a Los Angeles fertility clinic in 1997.

Scientists have been able to find the genes for hair color, eye color, gender, and skin tone, and in the future scientists may be able to detect and cure genetic diseases in embryos using a process called germ line therapy. However, this process has only been used on

- Less chance child is born with serious disease and defects

-Parents are guaranteed gender

-ability to make a child who could be the perfect donor to a sick child


- Genetic Disorder could occur during the procedure

- Cost: Harder for low income families to get procedures done

- Discrimination Can Occur In: Gender, Race, and who can and can't afford etc.
