Unpacking Unit 6
March 21, 2014
The sea's salt comes from eroded soil, volcanic emissions, sea floor reactions, and atmospheric deposition. Many deep ocean ecosystems are independent of energy from sunlight and photosynthetic organisms.Waves, tides, and predation have caused vertical zonation along the shore, greatly influencing the distribution and diversity of organisms. Human use of ocean resources has increased greatly and because of that, the future sustainability of ocean resources depends on our understanding and knowledge of the resources.
Emissions- The production and release of something (Gas, radiation, etc.)
Shore- The land along the edge of a body of water.
Open ocean- Any water that is far from shore and the ocean floor.
Deep ocean- The lowest layer, at a depth of 1000 fathoms or more.
Photosynthetic- The process by which a plant or microorganism converts light energy into chemical energy.
Hydrothermal vents- An opening in the ocean floor in which hot, mineral-rich water flows from.
Chemosynthetic- Biological conversion of one or more carbon molecules and nutrients into organic matter using the oxidation of inorganic molecules (e.g. hydrogen gas, hydrogen sulfide)
Exploration- The discovery of new places and/or things
In my opinion, this unit is relevant to my everyday life because it explains a lot of the natural activity currently changing our lifestyles above the ocean. Many medications are created from plant life underwater, constantly changing our medications and studies of water.
1.Where does the salt in oceans come from?
2.What are the three marine ecosystems?
3.Explain why hydrothermal vents exist
4.Explain what a chemosynthetic organism is
5.Explain what a photosynthetic organism is
6.What is zonation? How does it effect us?
7.How will knowledge of marine organisms help us in the future?
8.How do volcanic emissions effect the ocean waters?
9.There are limits to how much we use the ocean resources. How can overuse effect the sea?
10.What does it mean for an underwater ecosystem to be independent of sunlight?
