If awareness could spread as fast as the virus...
We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow men. ~Herman Melville
It doesn't matter where you live, your sexual orientation or how many sexual partners you had, HIV is a virus that can affect any one at any moment! There are some regions that are more at risk than others, but that's mostly because of the lack medical. For example, Sub-Saharan Africa, which is made out of many third world countries, has 23.5 million adults and children living with HIV whereas Oceania has 53 000 people living with the virus. However, even though North America is considered a developed region of the world, there is still 1.4 million people living with HIV and 21 000 AIDS related death. Not only is the virus spreading worldwide, but the number of people it affects is growing, and it's growing fast! In 1990 there were only 8 million infections in the world, which is still quite a lot, it has spread to 27 million in 2000, 33 million in 2010 and over 34 million in 2012. HIV has spread extremely fast and has killed over 25 million people since it has been discovered. Those numbers may not seem as intense as there are, but you have to keep in mind that no matter how much you think you know someone or even yourself, go get tested, protect yourself and protect those around you. Don't forget that there are many ways to keep yourself safe, such as condoms or not exchanging needles, but also something as simple as covering your cuts with a bandage. HIV is a mercyless virus that can turn your life upside-down.
