"So boy, don’t you turn back. Don’t you set down on the steps."
“Mother to Son” by: Langston Hughes
This poem is about a mother telling her son to be strong and she is telling him how bad her life was. "Life for me ain't been no crystal stair."
The characters are a mother and a son, and the mother loves her son and she doesn't want his life like her life when she was little and growing up.
The theme of this poem is to keep your head up high, don't set down your goals in life live your life to the fullest. I choose this theme because the mother says "So boy, don’t you turn back.
Don’t you set down on the steps
’Cause you finds it’s kinder hard.
Don’t you fall now—
For I’se still goin’, honey,
I’se still climbin’,
And life for me ain’t been no crystal stair." She wants to motivate her son to not be like she was and just live life.
There is not conflict.
The figure of speech that is being used is a Metaphor "Life for me ain't been no crystal stair." This metaphor means that her life has been hard for her. "It’s had tacks in it,
And boards torn up,
And places with no carpet on the floor."
LIVE LIFE TO THE FULLEST AND DON'T LET ANYTHING BOTHER YOU, BE STRONG!
