What really happened?
On September 13th, 1922, the well-known Jay Gatsby, prosperous and rumored bootlegger, was found shot dead in his pool. Accused murderer, George Wilson, was near the scene deceased after allegedly committing suicide after killing Gatsby. According to one of Gatsby's main servants, "Wilson came to Gatsby's mansion in West Egg, Long Island and shot Gatsby while he was emerging from the pool before shortly shooting himself in the head." Was this incident just a man going ramped and killing a random, innocent person, or was there more to the story?
After doing research and hearing around the city, there seemed to be many facts and/or rumors going around about "The Great Gatsby". He was said to be an Oxford man, a killer, a bootlegger, and most of all, a man of mystery. All these accusations were put out there, but were they all true and did they cause his death? Although Gatsby seemed to be such a bad person, he was of acquaintance to a number of people. Some of these people were said to be Nick Calloway, Tom and Daisy Buchanan, Jordan Baker, and Wolfsheim. Calloway was Gatsby's best friend when we was alive and well and seemed quite angry about all the rumored secrets going around about Gatsby. Tom Buchanan, however, didn't like much about Gatsby and who he was. He said "I found out what Gatsby's 'drug-stores' were. He and this Wolfsheim bought up a lot of side-street drug-stores here and in Chicago and sold grain alcohol over the counter. That's one of his little stunts. I picked him for a bootlegger the first time I saw him, and I wasn't far wrong." He also stated that, "Gatsby deserved to die because of his cheating with Wilson's wife Myrtle and killing her." Jordan Baker stated, "I only met Gatsby a couple of times and I think well of him." After asking Daisy Buchanan her thoughts on Gatsby, she refused to speak.
After hearing all of the backlash about Gatsby, Nick decided to speak up and tell the truth about everything he knew true about Gatsby. Although Gatsby was accused of being in a relationshipwith Wilson's deceased wife Myrtle, Nick spoke against it saying, "Tom was having an affair with Myrtle and wanted to put it off on Gatsby to cover himself. If it weren't for that, he'd probably be killed himself! During the accident he went into a room with Wilson and probably lied to him! Daisy was also involved in a relationship with Gatsby. Tom wanted Gatsby dead for that anyway!" Now, Tom doesn't seem like the only backstabber here. Daisy didn't want to speak up about Gatsby because they had an affair going on. However, so did Tom and Myrtle. Did Tom hate Gatsby for having an affair or for Gatsby killing his mistress? That's what we all want to know. In contradiction to this, Calloway stated, "Gatsby didn't kill Myrtle, that's not what happened." If this is so, who did and why hasn't he told? Because of these rumors, Gatsby was killed. Is Nick telling the truth or is he just covering up for a good friend? Was Gatsby a heartless coward, or a sweet spirited man that no one really knew about? In addition to the list of people Gatsby knew, there was someone else. His name was Jay Gatz and he is Gatsby's father. Gatz said he knew his son would be successful. He stated, "Jimmy (Gatsby) was bound to get ahead. He always had some resolves like this or something. Do you notice what he's got about improving his mind? He was always great for that. He told me I eat like a hof once and I beat him for it". Now why would someone want to kill someone such as himself?
If these rumors are false, then why was Gatsby said to be such a bad person? It seems that Tom was the reason that Gatsby was killed. If Wilson would have known about the affair between Myrtle and Tom, there may have been a double homicide.
