This book written by Laurie Anderson is a great book. Well let me tell you this great story. There is this little girl named Isabel and she has a little sister named Ruth. They were with their owner waiting to get sold because his owner was trying to get money. Then their luck came because a lady passes by her name was Mrs.Lockton , with her husband Mr.Lockton and they said ''That Mrs.Lockton needed more help around the house because she didn't have any slaves to help her. Later on Isabel and Ruth get separated.
So when they got to the house she gave her orders to go clean up the house. Then later on Mrs.Lockdown's sister needs help so she told Isabel ''You shall do whatever Madam tells you to do''. Then one night a fire got started by the British , when Isabel was trying to get Madam out of the house a part of the roof fell off and Madam got stuck. While she was trying to get Madam out the air started to make her cough so when Isabel was able to pull Madam out of the house she went to go get the a doctor. When she got Madam to the doctor the doctor gave Madam some antibiotics for her to feel better. The next few days Isabel kept coughing up ashes from the fire. So the next day Madam got something from the mail, when Isabel gave the envelope to Madam to open it , it had two clumps of mouse fur inside. The next day Madam was glue on her eyebrows were supposed to be because her hair got burned off in the fire so she pits both clumps of mouse fur on her brows. Madam was getting ready for the arriving guests because her husbands co-workers were coming over for dinner. Then when the dinner started Madams mouse eyebrows started to fall off and one eyebrow fell into her turtle soup. At the end Isabel ends up escaping and gets on a boat to New Jersey for her to row.
I would give this book four and a half stars because it was really outraging how it explains her life as a servant and how she tries to escape.
