"HAVE AN OPINION ON POVERTY"
Social Mavericks works on initiatives to fight poverty, because poverty is highly unfair. We don’t like that. We want to fight poverty is big, global way. But the truth is I don’t know much about living in poverty. I was raised in a well-to do neighborhood. The mayor of the town lived around the corner, just like a senator, a well-known architect and the trainer-coach of the local professional soccer team. We were upper-middle class. Our children would not have to achieve above-average to simply maintain Middle-Class status.
A friend of mine gets up at 5:30 in the morning to catch a bus to her work. She is a ‘domestica’, although she calls herself ‘una muchacha’, which is a friendlier word, used in Colombia, for the same thing: cleaning houses. Sometimes she has to wait 30 minutes or an hour to catch one. It takes about her about two or three hours a day just to get to work and back. If she had a car, back and forth would take no more than 30 minutes a day. That is a lot of hours a year. Her employers don’t pay for transport; she pays 30-45 minutes of work for the transport.
Social Mavericks fights poverty by powering the powerless. I think it sounds good. But as slogans go, after a few seconds you get that empty feeling. Read More
