Spanish- American War

In, 1898 was a war between Spain and the USA.
The treaty of Paris resulted from this , allowed american control over Cuba temporarily.

Initiative & Referendum

Voters get to introduce a bill into the state to be voted on, and can vote on whether something becomes a law. introduced to the US in 1898.

Rough Riders

First Us, Voluntary Cavalry, Led by Theodore Roosevelt, Played role in the Fifth Corps, and the Battle of San Juan Hill 1898.

Treaty of Paris

The signing of this Treaty ended the Spanish American War, and the US has the victory. 1899

Philippine-American War

The war was dominated by Emilio Aquinaldo, 1899-1902, suffered severe losses and finally gained independence by 1946.

17th Amendment

Provided the direct election of Senators by the voters, passed by congress May 13th, 1912, and ratified April 8th 1913.

16th Amendment

Provided for federal income tax, passed by congress on July 2nd, 1909, and ratified February 3rd, 1913.

World War 1 Starts

August 1st, 1914,
War was caused by alliances Germany and Austria, 7 million people died in the war, and known as the first and biggest war.

German Proclamation

1915, the waters around the British isles were war zones it was a warning to stay away, Germans would sink any ships near the area.

Sinking of the Lusitania

The British ship Lusitania was sunk  by a German submarine killing over 120 Americans, this was on May 7th, 1915.

Sussex Pledge

An agreement from Germany on April 24th, 1916 not to sink anymore merchant ships without warning, they did not want warto start.

Failure of Diplomacy

Sinking of the ships continues, February 3rd, 1917.

Zimmerman Telegram

Germany's telegram to the Mexican Government asking to attack the US in exchange for Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. the British were smart enough to catch it before it reached the Mexican Government in 1917.

Wilson Declares War

Wilson asked Congress to send troops and declared war on Germany, April 2th 1917.

Selective Service Act

Required all men from the ages 21-30 to register for the military, this started on May 18th, 1917.

Espionage act

Made it a crime to interfere with the U.S war effort or to help out our enemies, June 15th, 1917.

American Expeditionary Forces

Consisted of the United States Armed Forces, sent to Europe for world war 1. Fought against German forces, 1918.

18th Amendment

Banned all alcohol.  Ratified January 16th, 1919, went into effect one year later on the same day. Was repealed by the 21st amendment on 1933.

19th Amendment

Granted thr right for women to vote, passed by congress on June 4th, 1919, and ratified on august 18th 1920.

Treaty of Versailles

A treaty that ended the state of war between Germany and the allied powers, signed June 28th 1919, ending the war.
