FISHING INDUSTRY

OVERVIEW

(Haitham) Fishing is a huge primary industry although we are capable of fishing many different types of fish’s. There’s still a limit to how much we can fish. Specifically speaking in New Brunswick, Labrador, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and The Grand Banks which is where most of our cod used to be located. But now it’s all gone because we've taken our huge cod industry for granted and fished freely and created a limit to how much we can fish. Now In this brief presentation we are going to talk about; value of this industry, how many Canadian’s are employed by this industry, is this a renewable or non-renewable industry, the environmental impacts of this industry, the challenges faced by this industry, and the sustainable use of this industry in the 5 location listed above.

LOCATION AND EMPLOYMENT

(Calvin) The Fishes or Cod is usually found in Newfoundland land,Labrador,New Brunswick  and Nova Scotia. They're mostly found in the Grand Banks. It is because all of the fishes went from the George bank near the warm Gulf stream to the Grand Banks. A plethora of cod comes from Labrador, it is because of the cold Labrador current pushes it to the Grand Banks. The exports of fish has a value to Canada of 4.4 billion dollars. While the imports of fish are valued at 2.0 billion dollars. Canada's fish exports are much greater than our seafood imports, which helps our "balance of trade."The exports of fish has a value to Canada of 4.4 Billion dollars

While the imports of fish are valued at 2.0 billion dollars
Canada's fish exports are much greater than our seafood imports, which helps our "balance of trade." The value of is about $5 billion a year, and 25%.
163,768 people were directly engaged in part time or full time and 107,113 are indirectly .The benefits of the fishing industry is that it provides more job opportunities. For example over 90% of all direct and indirect jobs are located in rural, coast and aboriginal communities in Canada
It is because, the fishing industry provides a huge impact to Canada's imports and exports. In contrast,Canada gains an amazing $452.8 from exports. As the economy improves the trade deficit comes from 3.5 billion, comes up to a deficit to 7.2 dollars. The exports of fish has a value to Canada of 4.4 Billion dollars

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS AND CHALLENGES

(Haitham) Fishing industry is considered a renewable source mainly because fish’s are capable of reproducing meaning if we just take a couple of fish then more will just reproduce. But this makes people think we can fish as much as we want and it will reproduce but there is a limit to how much we can fish before it reproduces. And although it’s true fishes can reproduce, with our current huge fishing rate, over-fishing we do, and underestimating the amount of "fish in the sea" we've limited our self to a number of fishes we can fish basically meaning that our fish is non-renewable.

(Haitham) This short animation shows our biggest problem to come, which is stopping over fishing. Also this video demonstrate that our fishing increases along our timeline and it show's as time goes on how much of a non-renewable resource fishing has become. Lastly it predict's that in the near future our over fishing problem will cause our fishing to become extinct.

(Chris) Environmental Impacts-Over-fishing, pollution and other environmental factors were causing the fish population to decline.-Some fishing techniques can cause habitat destruction.-The use of explosions and cyanide fishing can damage coral reefs and other marine organisms.-Dynamite fishing is use to stun or kill fishes. Very illegal and explosive to the coral reef.-Global warming seem to be increasing the water's temperature.

Challenges this fishing industry faced-Due to over-fishing economy is declining making the industry collapse.-The lack of salmon and cod they have. They're catching more of them more than they're reproducing.-Because of global warming and over-fishing caused the west coast fishery to collapse.-With improved technology, satellites and sonar navigation has helped locate schools of fish faster. Very ironic with the advanced technology made over-fishing easy. That's one of the reasons why the East Fishery collapsed.

SUSTAINABLITY

( Prahb )

Yes. I think that this industry is sustainable right now.The industry has a robust system than ensures that fishing is sustainable. The industry is improving the management of fishers and aquaculture.DFO (Department of Fisheries and Oceans) is responsible for the management of fisheries and it is doing well to ensure the limits, impacts and it is operating a sustainable way.The industry is doing well to ensure that it limits the impact on the environment because of DFO.It is operating well because of DFO is doing many things. The 2 big things DFO has done are turning fishing into a law and you must have a licence to fish and many more.

(Haitham) This video show's our demand for a sustainable way of fishing. We may not realize it now but in the near future our fish's will soon come to extinction. But not until someone find a sustainable solution to our overfishing problem

1. What are the locations of fishes or cod?

2. What is main problem/the biggest problem the fishing industry is facing?
