Ponyboy experiences The Separation the known when Johnny kills a soc to save Pony’s life.
Late at night a at a park, a gang of socs at a park a gang of socs decide to jump Pony and Johnny. One member begins to drown Pony, and Johnny reacts and tries to defend Pony and ends up killing the soc,
“‘I killed him... I killed that boy’” (56).
In the Hero's journey, the separation from the known is when the hero does something that causes him or her to be in the unknown, and an uncomfortable situation in their life.
In The Outsiders Ponyboy enters the separation from the known when johnny kills a soc to save pony’s life. They panic and think that since they are socs they will be treated unfairly and the police will make them “fry” in the electric chair. this is separation from the known because pony does not want to be a criminal but in this situation he has to be one.
Ponyboy experiences the initiation when he wakes up wondering where he is. A few seconds later he realizes hes at the hideout church,
“for a second I didn’t know where I was, you know where how it how it is when you wake up in a strange place and wonder where in the world you are” (68).
In the hero’s journey, the first part of the initiation is when the hero goes through an line of challenges and is in the unknown.
In The Outsiders Ponyboy experiences the initiation because when he wakes up he doesnt know where he is because hes in the unknown. Pony is used to the city but he is in the country, he goes from sleeping at home to sleeping at a “spooky” church, and he goes from family to alone
Pony is not used to this and its a challenge to cope with it.
Pony continues to experience the initiation when johnny is in the hospital dying.
Pony says this when the truly realises johnny is in the hospital dying from the fire,
“Its true, I thought numbly, he is dying” (119).
In the hero’s journey, the second part of the initiation is when the hero has to through more challenges and deeper in the unknown, and its when the hero has to go through the abyss transformation, revelation, and atonement.
In The Outsiders, Pony has to go through more challenges, deeper in the unknown, and through those four steps when is in the hospital dying because Pony started going through this journey with johnny and doesn't want to end it with out him and johnny and Pony are very good friends.
Ponyboy experiences The Return to Everyday life when he goes from not “tough” to “tough” but still caring. Pony starts to make his gift. he narrates,
“began like this: when I stepped out into the hot sunlight” (179) .
In the hero’s journey, The Return to everyday life is when the hero returns with a gift and wisdom.
In The Outsiders, Pony return with a gift which is the book The Outsiders which has his wisdom that greasers and socs are the same and that its hard all around. Pony goes from being ignorant with knowledge to having a gift with wisdom. Pony this idea that its hard all around, but never really accepts it until The return to everyday life
