The University of Texas at El Paso

2nd Period

The reason I chose UTEP was because of its engineering program. Ever since I was little, Ive enjoyed putting things together and seeing how things work. To be able to wake up and do something that I enjoy, is something I look forward to. Hopefully I could be a Petroleum or Civil engineer and help people in their everyday lives. Right out of college, I hope to pursue a career in one of these fields.

The school was founded in 1914 as the State School of Mines and Metallurgy. At the time, only 27 students had enrolled into the school. By 1916, enrollment had grown to 39 students. The construction of the Sun Bowl Stadium started in 1963. In 1966, the men won the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship over Kentucky 72-65. Located on the U.S.-Mexico border, it has enabled generations of students to pursue their goals through higher education in one of the largest binational communities in the world.

College Application

Admission Requirements

Minimum GED score of 45, or top half of high school class with 20 ACT or 920 SAT (exclusive of Writing). Provisional admission for in-state residents not meeting these criteria. For students in top quarter of high school class, any score acceptable.

Campus Life

There are many ways to make your time at UTEP special. One way is to connect by participating and celebrating some of the traditions that have come to represent both what it means to be a Miner and what it means to be part of the UTEP family. Here are just some of the things that UTEP has to offer: Homecoming, Minerpalooza, TCM Day, New Miner Convocation and Orange Fridays.

Long Term Goals

One of my long term goals is to go to college and major in civil engineering. I am hoping to receive a scholarship while I am in high school for either sports or academics. Taking AVID has helped me realize all the scholarships that many organizations and schools have to offer. Now I am taking an Introduction To Engineering class and this has helped me to get a feel of what engineers do everyday. I hope to stay in the endorsement all the way through high school to help me improve in what I love doing.

Right out of high school, I hope to enroll into UTEP and start working on getting my degree. Hopefully I can stay in school as long as I need to get my masters degree. If I work hard in the beginning, I won't have to in the end. Once I've graduated from college, I hope to pursue a career that I've enjoyed doing since I was little. This is something I look forward to in the future and I will try my best to accomplish it.

Visuals of Career

Civil engineers help design and build the structures all around us, including buildings, bridges, dams, highways, railways, and sewers. These things help us with our everyday lives!

Starting salaries for civil engineers vary according to their level of education. For example, those who have a bachelor’s degree receive an average starting salary of about $52,000 a year. Those with master's degrees and PhDs often receive higher starting offers.
The median annual income for all civil engineers is around $79,000, with most earning somewhere between $51,000 and $122,000 a year. However, some experienced engineers with management responsibilities make more than $122,000 a year. Generally speaking, salary increases steadily with experience and expertise.

Dear Hector,

I am writing this letter to apply for an employment opportunity that your company might have or is willing to offer in the future. Please accept this letter and accompanying resume as evidence of my interest in applying for this great first time experience. I feel my hard work and dedication would prove to be an asset for your organization. I am looking for an honored job that will add experience to my long term career in the future. Here are some of my aptitudes that I would bring to the position. I am much disciplined in everything that I do and I try to stay on task without getting side tracked. I am also a great team worker. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
