Priests see actions such as dropping the bible and not paying attention during mass as sacrileges to the church

-Sanctuary

sanctus   /   noun   /   a sacred place; any place of refuge

After being in battle for 12 weeks, John's house seemed like a sanctuary once he was able to finally come home.

-Hieroglyphic

hieros / adjective / written with pictures to represent sounds or meanings of words; hard to read

John received a zero on his essay because his handwriting was so hieroglyphic his teacher could not understand one word.

-Expiate

John tried to expiate forgetting his dinner plans with Sally by bringing her flowers the next day.
