America's Rise to Power

Since the arrival of Manifest Destiny, America has thrived for greater. During the late 1800's American's begins to make a name for themselves.

In 1898 America's first big win was the Spanish-American War. America, fighting for Cuba's independence against Spain, showed the other major countries that they were a force to be reckoned with. This war, ending on august 12, 1898, allowed America to get a glimpse of how being a world power feels.

In 1899, shortly after defeating Spain, America was pulled right back into war by Filipino Nationalist, who felt that America's colonization of the Philippines showed that they were incapable of self rule.

Secretary of State John Jay

Also in 1899 to 1900, an Open Door Policy with China was made. Initiated by John Hay, the Secretary of State during this time, the Open Door policy allowed open trade between China and America.

The Platt Amendment

In 1901, America added this amendment to a U.S. army appropriations bill, stating that america would remove all military occupants from Cuba and leave the governing of that land to its people.
