Journal Entry 3

Dear ma,

Camp here is real tough, everyday we do drill after drill, everyday, and the day after that, and the day after that. On a normal day when we don't have to do drills we always have fun, sometimes we will just play cards and then we have games that we play like a little ball and that's it. Chores here are real hard too, we have to clean our clothes, clean up our tents and then we have to clean up the whole area sometimes. If we are lucky we get to go hunting for more food.

We see and hear people cutting wood in the morning for the warmth of each tent.

Interview with Jeremiah

Cole, Ashley, aammia
When creating our story we read pages 1, 2, 3, and 4, 8, 14, .

Your job is to interview the fictional character of Jeremiah Handley and
write out the answers as you believe he would have given them.

Make sure to include information or ideas drawn from your analysis of
primary sources. Cite the source material as your teacher directs.

Interview question 1

Jeremiah, when you chose to __enlist with your brother with the southern army_______________________________,
what caused you to make that choice?
When i chose with my brother and try to enlist into the southern army, i did that because

Me and my brother wanted to stay together and not get separated. Also I knew i wouldn't be able to take care of the farm that well and then friends told us that they would take very good care of my mom.

Interview question 2

Jeremiah, looking back what is something in your life that you are proud or
happy about?

I'm happy about being an officer for the Union and being able to fight in the Civil War and support what I think should happen in this country. Also I was happy about being the commander and yelling at every one telling them what to do.

Interview question 3

Jeremiah, what is one thing about your life you wish had been different?

Something different, mm mm there would be a lot. Like I wish that my mom didn't get sick and me and brother would have stayed home with my mom and we would all be happy. then i wish i didn't go into a really bad Confederate camp which was not good at all then either getting shot.

Interview question 4 (Look back at the italicized section at your "ending")

Jeremiah, _Would you make different choices you have done or would stay with your decisions?_________________________________________________?

Ask a question that makes Jeremiah talk about one of the issues brought

up at the end of the story you chose to create.

How was it like a a Confederate camp ad also what did you see during the war besides dead bodies from both sides.

Journal Entry 5

When we are at camp and not doing anything we had to find something to do. What we did in our free time was to make food and play games. Some of us would do cockfights or just kick a ball around when there was a fire we would all crown around and sing songs to get the homesickness away. Food was really tough, in our hardtack we would find a bunch of worms and bunch of other stuff in there that was nasty. In our cornbread we would find cow webs in there because it was so rotten out. Then people made these fruit cakes and we found leaves and roots in them and when you tried to put them in a soup it was real nasty. One time I heard that a solider found 32 worms in one piece of hardtack.

Journal Entry 7

Dear Ma,

Woke up hearing men screaming like they were being tortured, seeing men and children with no legs or arms and walking by tents seeing men screaming while the surgeon worked on his body wide awake. Seeing holes with just legs and arms or even fingers filled in the hole. Then I see a man on a stretcher with no legs from an explosion from a cannon. I felt like i was getting sick just from seeing all of the wounded or even the dead. After that I threw up a bunch of times and a doctor came up to me and asked if I was okay.

Journal Entry 8

Dear mom,

I wanna go home real bad, real bad. I really wish some old rebel shot me in the foot so then I can't fight no more and then be home with you and the rest of the crew. My bread basket misses the old Biscuits and honey and all the food I can eat, and all the time I needed to rest and sleep. Ma I wanna go home really bad.
