Pat McCrory was born on October 17, 1956. He graduated from Ragsdale High School in Jamestown, North Carolina. McCrory began his political career in Charlotte in 1989 when he was elected as an At-Large City Councilman. At the age of 39 in 1995 he was elected the city of Charlotte's mayor, making him the city's youngest mayor. McCrory took office on January 5, 2013. He is the first Republican Governor of the state since James Martin left office on January 9, 1993.
The Governor is the chief executive officer of the state. Like the President the Governor has many hats. As Commander-in-Chief he can't send troops over seas like the President, but he has the power to use the National Guard to enforce the execution of the laws and put down insurrection. Depending on the Governor's political party he/she leads it and is the public face of it. As the Governor he/she can also sign or veto a bill.
