Lung Cancer

Thesis Statement

Lung cancer is a carcinoma, an abnormal growth that usually starts in the epithelial cells that line the bronchial tubes or the alveoli. Lung cancer is the third most common type of cancer in the U.S. & it's the leading cause of all cancer deaths.

What causes it?

  • Smoking
  • Exposure to passive smoking (also known as secondhand smoke)
  • Exposure to radon gas
  • Exposure to asbestos
  • Family history

People at Risk

  • People who were exposed to high-risk substances such as asbestos at work and who also smoke
  • Males over age 60
  • People who have smoked a pack or more of cigarettes a day for 20 years or more
  • People exposed to smoke from other smokers
  • People who were exposed to radon and who smoke
  • Smokers with an elevated genetic risk for the development of lung cancer.

Symptoms of Lung Cancer

  • A cough that doesn't go away
  • Constant chest pain
  • Coughing
  • Shortness of breath or hoarseness
  • Repeated bouts of pneumonia or bronchitis
  • Facial or neck swelling
  • Loss of appetite & weight loss
  • Fatigue/Weakness
  • Night sweats

How To Reduce/Prevent It

  • Limit your exposure to carcinogens(a substance that can cause cancer)
  • Stop smoking
  • Never smoke
  • Avoid secondhand smoke

Treatments

  • Surgery
  • Radiation therapy
  • Chemotherapy
  • Cryosurgery
