Be a Representative of Your State

Qualifications to be a Representative:

  • Must be 25 years of age
  • Must be a citizen for at least 7 years
  • Must live in the state you want to represent

Job Description:

Members of the House of Representative and Senate must:

  • be a Legislator (make laws)
  • be a Committee Member (screen proposals)
  • be constituents of who they represent (represent as a trustee, delegate, partisan, or politico)
  • be a servant of their constituents
  • are politicians


Benefits/privileges: some benefits of being a Representative are the fringe benefit (tax deductions), travel allowances, franking privilege (can send mail postage free), free printing, insurance, and a house allowance


Salary: $174,000 - $223,500

Who just doesn't want to be rich?


Members of the House of Representatives have two years per term but no term limits. The framers put the term at two years so that Representatives will be more responsive and reflective to the will of the people.
