1-2.99 Richter Scale Value
These earthquakes are very minor. There is not much noticeable damage. Hanging objects may sway. These earthquakes feel like 0.6-600 kilograms of dynamite. They happen daily, every minute to hour in population.
Since these earthquakes occur frequently, it is not very hard to find an example, just pictures. An example would be near Cave City, Arkansas. It happened at about 9:00 A.M. on October 7, 2014.
3-4.99 Richter Scale Value
These earthquakes are typically minor to light earthquakes. They are felt by almost all if not all people. They may be compared to the passing of a larger truck. May cause windows to crack or hanging objects to fall. These happen daily but only weekly in population.
An example is a recent one in Afghanistan. It had a magnitude of 4.5. It happened on October 7.
5-6.99 Richter Scale Value
These earthquakes start to get more serious and doing more, noticeable damage. These earthquakes can do anything from moving furniture to breaking well built structures. These happen monthly but only every 10-30 years in population. These earthquakes can do light to heavy damage around the epicenter.
An earthquake in San Francisco on October 30, 2007. It had a magnitude of 5.6. Not too much damage, mostly just items falling off shelves. Many businesses had to close for a while to fix because of the damage.
7-8.99 Richter Scale Value
These are very serious earthquakes. Cause lots of damage like torn down bridges, building ripped off foundations as well as possibly being destroyed. They happen monthly to yearly but only every 50-100 years in population. Earthquakes like this can be detected all over the world and have enough power to power New York City for one year.
A famous earthquake of this magnitude is the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. Damage was significant. Buildings collapsed, roads split, and bridges tumbled.
9+Richter Scale Value
Devastating earthquakes that cause near total destruction. Waves of destruction can be seen with the naked eye. These rarely occur and only every 1000 years in population.
An example was in 1960 in Valdivia, Chile. It had a magnitude of 9.5. It was estimated to have 6000 deaths so it obviously had more than significant damage.
