Thematic Topic

In Society, people are very ignorant and fail to understand one another. The best way to understand someone or understand what they’re going through is to “stand in their shoes”, or look at things from their point of view.

Literary Criticisms

1. Humor and Humanity in To Kill a Mockingbird - Dolphus Raymond has to pretend to be someone he’s not, and people just assumed he was a drunk.

2.Reconstructing Atticus Finch - Atticus has to risk his social status and even his physical safety to defend this man who was poorly accused.

3.General semantics in To Kill a Mockingbird - People make many generalizations about groups of people.


Indirect Characterization - Scout is a very brave girl by the way she acts and speaks.

Atticus' sister Aunt Alexandra is a foil for Atticus-preferring traditional parenting methods to Atticus' frank discussions with his children.


The mockingbird is a symbol & "mocking" is a motif.


Since the story is a flashback to when Harper Lee (Scout) was about 6 years old, the narration is from a young girl.

First person point of view - limits how much the reader knows

Transition between childhood and adulthood adds different insights as well as adding maturity to the way she describes events


Historical - Declaration of Independence

Literary - Blackstone’s commentaries

Biblical - Night before Jesus’ crucifixion in the Bible when he was praying and asked the Lord to take this cup from him


Situational irony is present in the novel when Bob Ewell gives death threats to Atticus and his family, when in the end Ewell was the one who got killed not Atticus.
