Brain Surgeon

Columbia University is located in New York was founded in 1754 as a royal college with a royal charter for King George. It is the 5th oldest school in the U.S. The future leaders of this society were going to receive an education that was supposed to, "enlarge the mind, improve understanding, polish the man. and qualify them to support the brightest characters in all the elevated station s in life." Columbia University was the first medical school to provide the M.D. Degree.

Columbia University wasn't always called this name. It was first called the King's College. The American revolution suspended this school for 8 years so when it reopened, it was renamed Columbia. I wanted to go to this school because I want to be a brain surgeon or neurosurgeon if you will and this school is a school for physicians and surgeons. It is a really good school.

I want to be a Neurosurgeon based on inspiration. The first time I decided to be a brain surgeon was when I saw the movie "Ben Carson: Gifted hands." It was such an amazing movie and so inspiring because he was the first black man that did an operation on someone( a little girl at that). Usually when a procedure is done on you, you're not able to speak, you have poor balance, confusion, etc. when he did the operation on that girl, she was able to speak so if you ask me that is phenomenal!

Now I don't just want to be a neurosurgeon because of him. he may be an inspiration but that's not the whole reason I want to do this career. Being a brain surgeon seems so interesting just to help people or do procedures on patients. I am not one for helping people all the time but maybe my mind will change as I get older.

Neurosurgeons can make anywhere from 100k- 500k obviously depending on the state or hospital. Y ou must attend a 4- year college university, 4 years of medical school, and 2 years of neurological training or more, and you have to receive a medicine degree and be included in internships. When doing a procedure, you must have hand- eye coordination, and you tend to work long hours even on the weekends on call.

Questions & Answers

  1. Tell me about your job. Is what you do different in any way from what others in your occupation do?

I am a plastic surgeon. I perform plastic and reconstructive surgery on ethnic skin. I’ve been a surgeon for the past 15 years.

Differences in skin based on ethnicities are now being recognized. Skin heals and scars in different ways. I predict specialized surgeries for ethnic skin will become a sub-specialty in the next several years.

  2. Can you tell me about your background and how you got into this field?

I was attracted to my current field because of the art aspect of the profession as well as the medicine component. I believe a highly skilled plastic surgeon should have an artistic eye as well as the ability to draw because you have to understand proportions.

I was exposed to medicine in high school through a friend’s father, who worked in the field. Years later, I looked up my friend’s father to find out more about his work.

  3. What personal characteristics are required for someone to be successful in your job?

People skills are essential to a successful plastic surgeon. You are in a profession where you help people and are dealing with people.

Persuasiveness is key. You must be able to ease a person’s fears about the procedure as well as convince them to follow directions during the recovery process.

Persistence is important. You must be convinced that becoming a plastic surgeon is what you want to do because there is a lot of training involved. Additionally, in surgery, you must persist until a procedure is done correctly.

  4. How much job security is there for people in your field?

There is job security in this field. If you work in academia or a hospital, it usually takes 3 to 5 years before you can get a promotion. From there, you would be able to open your own practice. The majority of plastic surgeons have their own practice. Most hospitals don’t employ plastic surgeons.

  5. What other jobs could you do with the skills you have gained in this field?

Sales is one area someone with my background could venture into. Sales ability is a skill set that is attributed to highly paid people. A good salesperson must understand people and have a good gut instinct.

Marketing is another area to consider. Being able to distinguish yourself from other doctors is the key to a successful practice.

  6. What do you think the future holds for people in your occupation?

There will be less surgery and more injectables involved in plastic surgery. Technology has become less invasive and there is less cutting and scarring involved with the procedures.

For instance, an endoscope allows you to see beneath the skin without cutting. Lasers and liposuction technology are less invasive procedures.

  7. What are the biggest challenges in your job?

Dealing with the business aspect of plastic surgery is challenging. As a doctor, you do not get any business training. For example, there are pension plans and profit plans that you need to deal with. In private practice, you must hire, train, and fire staff.

  8. Are there many opportunities in your field? What should people do to get started?

Yes, plastic surgery is probably one of the most flexible surgery specialties. You can operate on a person from head to toe. There is a vast array of specialties to choose from. You can focus on hand surgeries, burn surgeries, or other areas.

You need 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school, 3 years of general surgery residency, and 3 years of plastic surgery residency in order to become board certified.

I don't want a terrible paying job and with brain surgery, I'm sure I won't get that but helping people with tumors or aneurisms is way more important.
