Rafflesia Flower- by Shenay M. Gorth

Have your ever wondered if there is a plant with a giant flower somewhere in this world?

It's rare and its really cool.

Today I will show you the Rafflesia plant.

It is found in the rainforests of Sumatra, Indonesia.

This is a man next to it showing how big it is. In the picture to the bottom left is it not bloomed yet. In the picture to the right is the inside of the Rafflesia plant.

It is the largest plant that can grow up to 3 feet across and weigh up to 15 pounds!

It is a parasite because it steals the food made by other plants.  It attaches itself to the stems or roots of their host plants by means of haustoria (suckers).    It has no visible leaves, roots, or stem.

When it blooms, it smells like rotten meat - yuck!

It attracts insects that pollinate the plant.

The Rafflesia plant is a giant plant. It lives in the rainforests of Indonesia. It gives off an odor when it blooms that smells like rotten meat. I don't want this flower in my house!
