Simple Machines

Levers are a solid bar that rotates, or turns on a fulcrum.

Class 1, 2, & 3

Ex. C1- hammer C2- stapler C3- tweezers

MA= effort arm divided by load arm

A wheel and axle is a wheel attached to a shaft or axle.

Ex. A wheel on a car.

MA= wheel radius divided by axle radius  

A screw is an inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder, used to raise and lower weights as well as to fasten objects.

Ex. Phillip's head screw

MA= diameter of screw divided by lead of screw thread.

An inclined plane is a simple machine that is a sloping surface, such as a ramp.

Ex. Ramp

MA= length of incline divided by height of incline.

A wedge is simple machine that has a thick end and a thin end.

Ex. Door stopper.

MA= side length divided by thickness

A pulley is a wheel with a grooved rim that turns on an axle.

Ex. flag pole

MA= two * number of pulleys
