Guru Tegh Bahadur was the ninth guru and was born at Amritsar on April 26, 1621. He was a guru for 31 years (1644- 1675). He was the youngest son of guru hargobind. Guru Tegh Bahadur was trained in martial arts of swordsmanship at a young age.He married in 1633 and eventually had one child. Guru Tegh Bahadur became known as Tyaj Mal the master of renunciation. He was the shield of India He sacrificed his life for freedom of religion and religious tolerance. Being as though guru Tegh had sacrificed his life for the Hindu religion and no one else could ever do so he gained significance and that's how he earned his name "Hind Ki Chaddar" or the Shield of India. He out his life in defense for the hindu religion. His two contributions to sikhism were that he formed the khalsa whcih was the community of the pure, and also elected whom became the final guru Adi Granth (Guru Granth Sahib).
