MLK's Big Brother Big Sister's day of service

The mission of the group is to bring a diverse group of people together for a common cause. It was created to honor Dr. Martin Luther King through community service that empowers individuals and their communities. Volunteering is free and its in almost every university or charity group.Big Brother Big Sister if funded by CNCS (Corporation for National and Community Service). One of the benefits of Big Brother Big Sister is that antisocial activities are reduced. This volunteering organization gives you a chance to meet with other people. Another benefit is that it helps you trust people more. When mentors are assigned they have a very big influence on their mentees.   Examples of people saved by the organizations would be a person without a father figure in their life. It can help lead young men to a straight and responsible path. Big Brother Big Sister can help improve your self concept or your self esteem. It helps build confidence

Big Brother Big Sister Service activities include feeding the homeless. They do a lot of food drives. Each time Big Brother Big sister pairs a child with a role model they start something incredible. which is a one on one relationship filled with trust and friendship that can blossom into a future of unlimited potential.

Researchers found that after 18 months of spending time with their Bigs, the Little Brothers and Little Sisters, compared to those children not in their program, were:

  • 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs
  • 27% less likely to begin using alcohol
  • 52% less likely to skip school
  • 37% less likely to skip a class
  • 33% less likely to hit someone
