Do Genes Influence Personality?
Genetics is the study of heredity and the variation of inherited characteristics. So what affect does this have on your personality? Your genes can influence many different facets of your personality and behavior. For example, did you know that your temperament could be hereditary? Many studies have been done to test this theory. Twin studies are very popular in this context. Twin studies are usually done on monozygotic twins who have been separated at birth. Because they were raised in different environments, it is easier for scientists to tell which traits are hereditary and which traits stem from their environmental surroundings. Shown below is a graph representing the correlation of sibling traits in a shared family environment.
What is the Nature Vs. Nurture Debate?
The Nature Vs. Nurture debate is one of the oldest arguments in the history of psychology. It is debating over whether certain aspects of human behavior are inherited(nature), or acquired(nurture). However, many modern scientists have now deemed this question too simplistic. For example, genetics may have lead an individual to seek out a certain environment, and in turn, this sought out environment could have significantly influenced this individual's behavior. Or, the environment can contribute to the influence genetics has on a person, because environmental stimuli can influence the expression levels of certain genes.
