Time line of nelson's life

1918

Was born on July 18 in Mvezo a small South Africa village. His birth name was Rolihlahla Dalibhunga Mandela. When he starts school in 1925 his teacher gives him the name Nelson

1925

He attended a primary school in Qunu where his teacher Mrs. Mingane gave him the name Nelson Because that was apart of school rules to give all students christian names.

1937-1940

He enrolls in Healdtown, a college in Fort Beaufort. Later on he goes to the Unviversty of Fort Hare in Alice but is asked to leave after boycotting the voting process of the Student Representative Council.

1941-1942

He flees to Johannesburg to avoid an arranged marriage. After doing this he meets Walter Sisulu, who becomes his mentor and a life long friend. Mandela starts working as a clerk at a law firm.

1943 - 1944

He joins the African National Congress as an activist. He later arrange the ANC's Youth League with Sisulu and Oliver Tambo.

1952
Mandela and Tambo opens the first black law firm in South Africa. He makes his law assets affordable, and gave free legal counsel to blacks who might not have legal representation.

1960

South African police kill 69 black protesters, who were demonstrating against the government's requirment for nonwhites to carry identity card as passes. After this the goverment declares state of emergency and bans Nelson's ANC.

1961-1963

He became the leader of a movement that had an underground military arm of the ANC. Nelson is arrested and sentenced to 5 years in prison. After the police raids the ANC offices, police find documents outing an armed campaign to overthrow the government.Nelson an 9 others are charged with conspiracy.

1964

After a 8 month trail he is sentenced to life in prison and is taken to Robben Island. Before the he left he made a speech '' I am prepared to die....... from my the dock".

1990-1991

Mandela is freed from prison.

1992-2008

Mandela is award many awards and people celebrates his 90th birth in 2008.

2011-2012

Hospitalized for a lung infection. Around 2001-2004 he was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

July 18, 2013

Nelson celebrates his 95th birthday while still receiving treatment for cancer. A few weeks later doctors said that Nelson remains in a stable but critical condition.
