Kinetic and Potential Energy
Kinetic energy is the energy of movement.
Potential energy is the energy of objects that are not in use. It exists as stored energy before movement.
When the roller coaster is going up a hill, it is creating potential energy. At the top of the hill gravity pushes the coaster down the hill, creating kinetic energy. The more kinetic energy a roller coaster has, the faster it will go.
Other Energy Types
Chemical Energy is potential energy that is stored in matter.
Heat is kinetic energy that is produced by the movement of molecules.
Electrical energy is the result of electrons moving through matter.
Sound is an energy produced by matter.
Mechanical energy is the energy of machines that comes from the moving parts of a machine.
Electromagnetic energy is radiowaves, microwaves, light, and X-rays.
Nuclear energy is the result of splitting the nucleus of an atom.
