"The Outsiders/Hero's Journey Essay"
The outsiders/Hero’s journey Tyler Weaver-Escobar
People say not to judge a book by it’s cover, but most people only give that chance to people they’ve already judged, by their physical appearance or their class in society and never to those who need it the most. Ponyboy curtis is the average greaser , a hood, the lower class, except he and aches for more in his life, ponyboy gets good grades and doesn’t steal or jump people. But one thing he does have in common with the all other greasers, he isn’t one by choice. In the the realistic fictional book the outsiders outsiders written by S.E Hinton ponyboy curtis is the main character who goes through the three phases of the hero’s journey becoming a hero returning with a gift .
When ponyboy gets hit by darry he’s decided he’s had enough of being yelled by darry and runs away experiencing separation from the unknown. Soon after he runs away he meets johnny in the parking lot and starts to look at the stars wondering what just happened, but then a group of socs comes for them angry at ponyboy and johnny for hanging out with their girlfriends and attack ponyboy almost drowning him. To stop them from killing ponyboy, johnny kills one of the socs. “ I killed him” said johnny pg (56). In the hero’s journey the separation from the unknown is when the hero is pulled out of his normal everyday life and is put into a new situation that leads to events that becomes the thresh-hold, that new situation with no experience is the separation from the unknown. In the outsiders when ponyboy wakes up from almost drowning he realizes what has happened. Now ponyboy’s mind is racing trying to find a way to get out of the mess that he and johnny are in but with no experience from his everyday life ponyboy is in the dark. Usually in the hero’s journey there is a guardian or someone who helps the hero through his journey giving some wisdom. In the outsiders dally is the guardian giving ponyboy and johnny a gun some money and a place to hide, all of this will help them deal with the separation from the unknown.
Ponyboy experiences the first part of the initiations after he and johnny run away ( after killing bob the soc who tried to drown ponyboy) and deals with new problems. In the hero’s journey the first part of the initiation is when the hero has face new challenges. When ponyboy and johnny realize they’re are little kids in the burning church they run in to save them risking getting caught and their lives. “All I could think was we started it, we started it, we started it” (91) In the hero’s journey the first part of the initiation is when the hero has face new challenges. In the outsiders the initiation is when ponyboy and johnny run into the burning church. This is the initiation because its after the separation from the unknown and ponyboy is risking his life. Instead of listening to dally ponyboy risk everything for little kid he doesn’t even know becoming a hero.
Ponyboy continues to experience the initiation when he comes back to his home and old life. But nothing in Ponyboy’s life his normal routine. Ponyboy has to deal with the street war with greasers against socs, being taken away from sodapop and darry while trying to deal with each-other, and Johnny dying. “‘ stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold . . .”’ (148). In the hero’s journey, the second part of the initiation is when the hero faces new challenges that may have also come out of the the first initiation, it is also made up of the abyss (the point where the hero is at his lowest point in the journey). In the outsiders when pony has come back from running away (the first initiation) he struggles with coming back to daily life because of the new challenges as a result of the initiation. When ponyboy has comed home he and Darry were doing ok, but as time went on they start fighting again bringing soda to his breaking point after years of being in the middle of their tug a war arguments. Even after winning the big fight with all the greasers against all the socs Ponyboy is deeper in the abyss because when he is telling johnny about the fight johnny dies leaving Ponyboy with anger and sorrow.
Ponyboy experiences the Return to Everyday life when he returns to his house after the hearing and goes to school. After going through the initiations and the abyss Ponyboy has come back with a gift but doesn’t know how to use it or even what it is until late in the very end of the book. “I Wondered for a long time how to start that theme, how to start writing about something that was important to me. And I finally began like this:” In the Hero’s journey, the return to everyday life is when the hero has accomplished the initiations and is now returning to his or her normal life, but with a gift. In the Outsiders when ponyboy is done with the hearing (deciding that he should stay with darry and sodapop) and goes back to school he enters the return to everyday life but is unaware of his gift until he starts writing his theme essay realizing that he knows what its like to be an outsider and that nobody has life perfect and decides to share his gift with his english teacher.
Ponyboy Curtis goes on the heros journey by going through the separation from the unknown the initiations, the abyss, and the return to everyday life changing his life forever. When ponyboy gets hit by darry he’s decided he’s had enough of being yelled by darry and runs away experiencing separation from the unknown. He experiences the first part of the initiations after he and johnny run away ( after killing bob the soc who tried to drown ponyboy) and deals with new problems as hecontinues to experience the initiation when he comes back to his home and old life. But nothing in Ponyboy’s life his normal routine. He experiences the Return to Everyday life when he returns to his house after the calling and goes to school.Nobody has a perfect life, no-matter how hard anybody tries people will still be unfair and undeserving, but it is that individual who decides what and who he or her is, not everyone else.
