The Cure - Seventeen Seconds
Picking a Cure album that fits this list is tough (and no guarantees this won't be the only one). I think "Jumping Someone Else's Train" was the first song I heard, but it's a blur. I do know that I had 'Seventeen Seconds', 'Faith' and 'Pornography' playing constantly for a stretch.
I'm picking their 1980 release 'Seventeen Seconds' if for nothing else than "A Forest". If this was 52 "songs" that shaped me, "A Forest" would be in the top 10 no doubt. The glorious rise and fall of the song - tied together by one of the most unmistakeable bass lines of darkwave carrying throughout. Four simple notes that the entire song wrap around.
All their early stuff really nails such a unique bit of gloom inside catchy hooks. "A Reflection" opens with haunting piano, flowing into "A Play For Today" & "Secrets" (two of the more 'straight-ahead' songs on the album). From there its a bit of a mix of where they were on "Three Imaginary Boys" and where they were headed towards "Pornography".
