Basically you have "disc platters" that record information and a complex "arm" that hovers over those platters reading the information they contain.  The information is stored in a ridiculous amount of little tracks that are created in a spiral

I recently broke down and purchased an external hard drive.  It was this attached beauty that I got from the apple store.  For the amount of information it holds, I feel that it is reasonably priced


Slowly become old school

Crazy lasers read (or make) bumps and grooves that represent data (1s or 0s).

Much cheaper because they are on their way out

This works by the power of wizardry.  I know that it has something to do with electrical currents, but even the simplified explanations were way over my head.
