ACHIEVEMENTS OF EACH DYNASTY:

1. Sui Dynasty:

Grand Canal (longest and oldest canal in the world)

Established a bureaucracy and civil service exams: several departments for different government functions

-rebuilt the Great Wall

2. Tang and Song Dynasties:

Inventions: Paper currency, Gunpowder, Fish (compass), Woodblock printing (moveable type - Bi Sheng)

Established meritocracy

Taught farmers new rice farming techniques

-improved waterways, canals and roads

3. Yuan Dynasty:

Improved postal system

Opened borders for international trade

4. Ming Dynasty:

Imperial City (Forbidden city)

Established dominant Chinese armada

Introduced new foods (sweet potatoes, corn, peanuts)

Repaired irrigation systems and Great Wall, reintroduced civil service exam

5. Qing Dynasty:

-re-established civil service exams

-allowed some international trade

Did their economy lead to development of new methods of exchanging goods?

SOCIAL:

Did resources or climate determine population patterns - which part of the land was settled?

Where there any diseases limited to a specific area?

What social hierarchy existed?

Was there any rapid increase or decrease of the population?

How did the government try to create a sense of identity?

Who owned the land?

POLITICAL:

-Was power held by only one ruler or was it shared?

BELIEF:

-Did their belief systems (religion or philosophy) affect their views on social classes or trade?

AESTHETIC:

-What type of literature or art flourished during this time?
