How Music Affects the Brain and Concentration
By Lindsay Leonard
To test whether or not music helped improve concentration I gave a memorization test. I wrote two lists of words on the board. Each list consisted of fifteen words from fifteen different categories. I had ten volunteers for the test. They were given three minutes to look at the words. Then, they were given three minutes to write down as many words as they could remember. The second list was a list of fifteen different words but from the same fifteen categories. This time the volunteers did the same thing but listened to the song "Angel of Hope" by Omar Akram while both studying and testing.
The results of the test are what I had hoped for. The second test, which included music, had a better outcome. All but one person improved the second time.
