Imagine an element so diverse that it has properties of both a metal and a non-metal. Imagine an element that weighs only 28.09 AMU. Imagine an element that is so friendly, that it is never found alone. Now, imagine an element that has the power to start a new technological era. When silicon was discovered in 1824, the no one expected it to be all of this, and more.
It all starts with a positive set of features
14 protons. 14 neutrons. 14 electrons. 42 reasons why silicon is the best element. Add that to it's standard features like being a solid at room temperature, 3 stable isotopes, and a boiling point of 3538 K, you can be sure that you are getting only the best from silicon.
The properties of excellence.
Silicon has many great properties, both physical and chemical. Silicon has a density is 2.33 grams per cubic centimetre. Silicon also has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale. Another property that makes silicon so great is that it is a semiconductor. Semi conductors are highly utilized in the electronics industry. Finally, silicon is very inactive, until the heat is on. When in a molten state, silicon is very reactive and bonds to many other elements.
A cornucopia of uses
Silicon is sometimes best described as an all-purpose tool. This one element be a silicon chip, used in computers, powering our world as we know it today. Silicon can be an ingredient in metal, a valuable resource for mankind. Silicon can become sand, which in turn can become glass, or concrete/cement. Silicon is even in pottery, enamels, and in high-temperature ceramics. Silicon is also a key ingredient in solar panels. Silicon can form many compounds like Silicon dioxide (sand,quartz,amethyst), Silicon carbide (an abrasive almost as hard as diamond) and Sodium silicate (soaps and adhesives). Silicon is as diverse as you want it to be.
