Friday, October 10

Welcome to choir at Lineville!  I am very excited to be working with your child this year.  This weekly communication is intended to help keep parents informed on what is happening inside the choral classroom.  Please make it a habit to check the updates weekly.

Assignments

5th Grade Choir

  • Do-Re-Mi should be memorized by next week.  Students may need to spend some extra time memorizing at home.  They find several resources in Schoology to help them memorize their music including the music itself and recordings of the song
  • If at all possible 5th graders are encourage to listen to our final song of the concert, Arise, as much as possible.  All choirs grades 5-12 will be performing this song together.  This is a very challenging song for 5th graders.  The more time they spend listening to the song the easier it will be for them to learn and memorize.  A great idea is to have your child listen to the recording while they are doing their homework.

6th Grade Choir

  • The Rainbow Connection should be memorized by next week. Students may need to spend some extra time memorizing at home. They find several resources in Schoology to help them memorize their music including the music itself and recordings of the song

Announcements & Reminders

Choir T-shirts

The choir t-shirt order was placed last week.  L & K Apparel has guaranteed that the order will be in prior to our 1st concert.  They have not however given me a timeline for exactly when the order will be complete.  Once I know that the orders have been completed I will pass the information on to you.  Please be patient!  :)

Assessments

Assessments on Major and Minor Pentachords started this week and will continue for the next 2 weeks.  For detailed information on the assessment, to see the rubric, or to read my assessment philosophy and procedures you can open the link below.

Upcoming Dates...

Monday, November 3:  Festival of Choirs, 7:00pm @ Bay Port Field House

Our first concert of the year is Monday, November 3rd. It is the district wide choir concert.  We have not yet set a pre-concert rehearsal time.  We will be determining this at next week's PLC meeting and will be announced in next week's newsletter.

THIS IS A REQUIRED CONCERT. This performance is part of your students grade. Students may not choose to miss the concert. It is not ok to miss a concert because they have other activities. The only excused absences are for illness and family emergencies. Any student who misses a concert will need to participate in the 'make-up concert'. This will take place during guided study at school. The exact date(s) of the make-up concert will be determined after November 3rd.

Where: The concert will begin at 7:00pm at Bay Port High School in the Field House.

When to Arrive: TBD - however, students will need to arrive early (for sure by 5:30) so that we can practice our combined song with Bay View and Bay Port. Please note - parents WILL NOT be allowed in the gym until after we have finished practicing (not even to reserve seats). Please plan accordingly!  The is plenty of seating available in the commons if you plan on staying and waiting for the doors to open.

What to Wear: Students should wear their black choir t-shirts. Students may wear jeans and clean, comfortable shoes. Students may also choose to wear nice shorts (jean or khaki) or skirts (provided they are compliant with the Lineville Dress Code). Students may wear a longsleeve shirt under their choir t-shirt if they wish.  Please note these are just suggestions.  There are plenty other options as well!  If possible I ask that students refrain from wearing sweatpants, athletic pants/shorts, or yoga pants.  That being said you should not go out and by something new for your child to wear.  Just make sure your child is wearing the choir t-shirt with pants, leggings, or a skirt that is compliant with school rules and that looks neat and clean.  Girls should NOT wear heels as they will be standing and walking on bleachers.  This is really a safety issue.

Miscellaneous: The concert should be less than 1 hour, most likely closer to 45 minutes in length. Students need to stay for the entire concert and may not leave until the concert has concluded. Not only is it important for them to hear the older choirs, but they will also be performing in the last song of the evening!

Oh the things we've learned!

6th Grades have working on their vocal technique.  This week's focus...dropping their jaws.

5th Graders have been working on their technique as well and have been practicing proper singing posture and learning to drop their jaws while singing.
