5 GENIUS HOUR: PASSION PROJECTS

PROJECT 1

Start a research passion project that would include maker and genius aspects and also incorporate some research skills. (This project is outlined above with videos and forms)

I would introduce the project with these questions:

What is important to you?”

“What do you want to learn more about?”

“What do you know a lot about that you could share with others?”

“If you were given time to learn or create something, what would it be? How would you do it?

I would show some intro videos about what Genius hour is and also finding your passion. (VIDEOS posted in begining of

I would put parameters on the project that they have o create an essential question, use three resources during their research and cite them. They could share their project in any format/creation that they choose. I would also have some supplies “maker” items that  would be available for them. Such as Legos, arts & crafts materials, playdough etc.

The CC Standards that this would address are:

CC.5.W.8 Research to Build and Present Knowledge: Recall relevant information from experiences or gather relevant information from print and digital sources; summarize or paraphrase information in notes and finished work, and provide a list of sources.

CC.5.R.I.1 Key Ideas and Details: Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.

CC.5.R.I.9 Integration of Knowledge and Ideas: Integrate information from several texts on the same topic in order to write or speak about the subject knowledgeably.

CC.5.SL.1 Comprehension and Collaboration: Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 5 topics and texts, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.

CC.5.W.7 Research to Build and Present Knowledge: Conduct short research projects that use several sources to build knowledge through investigation of different aspects of a topic.

PROJECT 2

To further expand upon the initial project I trialed end of last school year with the 3D printer demonstrations, I would do a 3D printer lesson and design challenge, they would also have to do some background research on the item they will be designing. For example if they will design a car they would have to present some information on history, fuel efficiency anything that they found regarding the item they are designing:

Students will be given some time in the computer lab or on iPads to research topic in the library, to play with Cubify, Morphi, and Tinkercad. Students will be able to choose a design challenge, as well as the program they are most comfortable using (between Morphi, Cubify, and Tinkercad). Tinkercad is better suited to upper elementary children. Morphi can easily be used with children as young as second grade. If a child does not have an iPad at home, which most don’t, they can use Tinkercad at home to work on the design challenge. This set-up allows individual teachers to participate in the challenge with their classes using iPad carts available in the lab or library, as well as use the computer lab, or even have some children work in their own classrooms with the classroom computers. Students will be guided to complete Tinkercad tutorials to help them learn the program .After one library period, children will already be on their way to creating their first design.

Students will be given parameters as to dimensions of design and challenge topics to choose:

3D Design Challenges – Max. Dimensions: 3.9L x 3.9 W x 4.9H inches

Possible topics:

Design and build a: 3D logo for Gardiner Manor School, small monster, car, plant, spaceship, robot, something you can wear, house etc.

The CC Standards that this would address are:

  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.3.7-Use information gained from illustrations (e.g., maps, photographs) and the words in a text to demonstrate understanding of the text (e.g., where, when, why, and how key events occur).
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.4.7-Interpret information presented visually, orally, or quantitatively (e.g., in charts, graphs, diagrams, time lines, animations, or interactive elements on Web pages) and explain how the information contributes to an understanding of the text in which it appears.
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.5.7-Draw on information from multiple print or digital sources, demonstrating the ability to locate an answer to a question quickly or to solve a problem efficiently.

CC.5.W.8 Research to Build and Present Knowledge: Recall relevant information from experiences or gather relevant information from print and digital sources; summarize or paraphrase information in notes and finished work, and provide a list of sources.

CC.5.W.7 Research to Build and Present Knowledge: Conduct short research projects that use several sources to build knowledge through investigation of different aspects of a topic.

Project 3-

Book Trailers or book review- for this project I would view several book trailers and book reviews on Amazon with students. We would come up with criteria of what makes a good review and trailer. For the project students would come up with a book trailer or book review. For a book review, students would come up with a star rating and review of the book that would be published our library catalog. The book trailers would be published on our school webpage. Students would have choice of which media tool that they would like to use for the trailer, i-movie, PowerPoint, Prezi, Animoto etc.

The CC Standards that this would address are:

Project 4

United Nations in the Library- This will be a multi cultural research project and celebrating diversity event. Students will pick a country they would like to learn more about and instead of just coming up with facts abut that country they will create a travel brochure, commercial, play, music etc. that represents that country or they write a monologue to be performed to the group introducing themselves and telling a story about themselves representing infomaion about the country . We will have Multi cultural day or United Nations Meeting where students will come dressed representing the culture of that country. They will play music and present to the group their country in whatever format or media source they choose. Traditional food will be shared during celebration day

Students will be given some time in the computer lab or on iPads to research country in the library. VRC databses will be highlighted along with some research skills each week that will help them with the project.

The CC Standards that this would address are:

  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.3.7-Use information gained from illustrations (e.g., maps, photographs) and the words in a text to demonstrate understanding of the text (e.g., where, when, why, and how key events occur).

Project 5-

What would it be like to be part of a creative Think Tank? In this project I would like to give the students an experience of what that could be like. In this Dream project I would have students be involved in an innovation project. To introduce the unit we would view several videos on Think Tank/ innovation groups. I would also have a few fun lessons on creativity, problem solving skills & team building. I see this unit of small student groups working together to come up with something to innovate, solve a problem, create a how to instruction or educate the class on a topic of importance. Perhaps it could evolve into a GM TedTAlk???? Students can choose any format they would like to share their information with the group with. Also would have library set up with many different creative/maker spaces so the teams could brainstorm and work together in.

The CC Standards that this would address are:
