Dr. Robert Ballard
Robert Duane Ballard was born on June 30, 1942 in Wichita, Kansas.He is 71 years old. Deep sea archaeologist and oceanographer Robert Ballard is best known for discovering the wreck of the Titanic in 1985. Ballard grew up in San Diego, California.
Ballard attended the University of Santa Barbra earning degrees in chemistry and geology. In 1947 after completing doctoral degrees in marine geology and geophysics Ballard became a marine scientist at the University of Rhode Island. Ballard then designed the Argo. The Argo was a submersible sled with a remote controlled camera. Ballard then went on the mission to find the Titanic on the navy research ship the Knorr. On September 1, 1985 the Argo had found the titanic lying in two pieces.
In 1989 Ballard established the JASON project. The JASON project was an educational program that uses video and audio satellite that feeds and later the internet allows students to follow expeditions. Ballard will always be remembered for the Titanic and his amazing discoveries.
